Uvarovite

 The Gem :

Uvarovite is lush emerald green in colour and is the only consistently green Garnet. The stone was named for a Russian statesman, it is also sometimes confused with Emerald because of its deep green colour and is hard to differentiate from the dark green Grossularite Garnet, Tsavorite, even though their element composition are different. It is very rare in gem form.

Uvarovite has small uniform crystals of calcium chromium silicate and is often found covered in its tiny crystal form, a natural surface coating of tiny sparkling crystals covering a rock. Uvarovite is a very special crystal to give to a loved one as it symbolizes what is precious and lasting, because it is so rarely found.

All Garnets honour Sekhmet, the Egyptian Goddess of War. She is the most commanding goddess of Lower Egypt, and is usually portrayed with the head of a lion and the body of a beautiful woman.

Green Garnet also honours Persephone, the Greek Goddess of Spring. She symbolizes festivity and the Earth alive with new growth.

Significance :

Uvarovite Garnets were engaged as inlaid stones in Celtic and Anglo-Saxon ornaments.  Garnets the colour of fire was also called Carbuncles (from fire-coals). It was a mineral in the breastplate of the High Priest. Eastern mythology emphasize that a carbuncle was pendant worn by Noah, in the Ark, to disperse light. The Greeks called the carbuncle the Lamp Stone and it was said, if suspended from around the neck, to give the command of seeing in the dark.

These Garnets served as a talisman in the Crusades for both the Christians and their Muslim enemies and were also recognized as a Warrior Stone. The Merovingian’s brought these garnets from faraway Ceylon (Sri Lanka) through the Silk Road, combining it with yellowish-brown stone also known as amber from the Baltic to create magnificent jewels. Since these two stones balanced each other, one warm, one cold, some see the source of the Frankish civilization in this amalgamation, the amber tempering the warrior-like fieriness of the Germanic people.

Princess Palatine revealed her husband, the brother of King Louis XIV, applying garnets on his body in this way.
